As Kuala Lumpur and Selangor gear up to host the 47th ASEAN Summit from October 26 to 28, major road closures and traffic diversions are expected across the Klang Valley. While the event marks a proud moment for Malaysia — welcoming world leaders including U.S. President Donald Trump and China’s President Xi Jinping — it also means motorists will need to plan their journeys carefully.
To minimise disruptions, the Education Ministry has already announced that 102 schools in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor will switch to online learning between October 23 and 29. Meanwhile, several highways and major city roads will be closed in stages, especially during VIP movements to and from the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) and KLIA/Subang Air Base.
According to Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, the closures will not be 24-hour lockdowns. Instead, they’ll happen temporarily when official convoys are on the move. Once the motorcade passes, routes will reopen.
The affected routes include:
If you’re planning to travel between KLIA, Putrajaya, or the city centre, expect brief but repeated closures throughout the three-day event.
Large-scale international events like the ASEAN Summit bring prestige — but they also test our transport resilience. By planning ahead and staying informed, residents and visitors can avoid unnecessary stress and keep Malaysia moving during this historic week.
Whether you’re a local commuter or an international guest, let’s all play our part to ensure a smooth journey across Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.
